Overview

The Fifth Frontier War has begun but the 214th Fleet is still in the Glisten subsector. The PCs superior, Lieutenant Thur Minka, calls a briefing:

In simple terms we believe the Sword Worlds Confederation will attempt to shift the political alignment of District 268 in their favour. Although the District is notionally neutral it is a patchwork of alliances and treaties. A key planet is the balkanised world of Tarsus, which provides much of the food in the District, and the key to Tarsus is the country of Regiment. Regiment was settled by Sword Worlders and has cultural ties to the Confederation. Regiment's current government is neutral with respect to the Confederation but Fleet Command fears a Confederation sponsored coup d'etet could change that. Therefore Fleet Command intends to plant a cadre of operatives to stall any such attempt. Your mission is merely to set up a secret supply and arms dump for the operatives to use. You will pose as merchants passing through ... your secondary objective is to collect any intelligence on the local situation. You will be assigned the the INS Katana (an unarmed Broadsword class Mercenary Cruise).

So what happened? Well, after arriving on Tarsus, they made contact with a rebel group intent on overthrowing the government of Regiment. Then they noticed the Regiment government was using Gram grav tanks. Conclusion: the Regiment government was already pro Sword Worlds Confederation, thus the rebel group must be working in the Imperial interest (albeit unwittingly). Having reached this conclusion they gave their entire cargo to the somewhat surprised rebels! Of course just because the Regiment government bought military equipment from a Sword Worlds military contractor doesn't mean it is strongly allied politically with the Confederation. And it turned out the rebel group were an underfunded Confederation secret service team sent to overthrow the Regiment government. Doh! So now they have a mess to clean up ... and then explain when the get back.
