Personal Load, Desert

A Desert Trooper in the Yorian Army (Yori/Regina) is trained to be able to fight in CEFO (Complete Equipment Fighting Order). That is, he must be prepared to carry equipment for all his operational needs for extended periods, without support. However, as this weighs in at almost 50 kg this is seldom done except in training and fitness exercises ... much is normally left in the trooper's APC.

The Desert Trooper's personal load (TL13) is as follows:

  • GR-402G Gauss Rifle (3.5 kg unloaded)
    • rifle magazine (0.4 kg)
    • grenade magazine (0.6 kg)

  • Desert 'Whites': (negligable weight)
    • rugged, lightweight, long-sleeved white shirt
    • rugged, lightweight, long comfortable white pants
    • sturdy hiking boots
    • broad-rimmed white hat
    • lightweight, plastic eye googles (to protect against dust and sunglare)

  • TL13 hand computer (0.5 kg)

  • Webbing (0.45 kg unloaded)
    • 5 Rifle Magazines (2 kg)
    • 5 Grenade Magazines (3 kg)
    • TL12 Image Convertor Binoculars (0.5 kg)
    • Handheld Communicator (0.5 kg)

  • 30-Liter Backpack with detachable ammo pack (1.8 kg unloaded)
    • Combat Armour (10 kg)
    • Sleeping Bag (1.8 kg)
    • Personal Grooming Kit (0.85 kg)
    • Armour Deodorant (0.015 kg)
    • Armour Repair Kit (5 kg)
    • Clothing Repair Kit (0.15 kg)
    • 7 days Survival Rations (2.625 kg)
    • 15 Rifle Magazines (6 kg)
    • 5 Grenade Magazines (3 kg)
    • Reflective Tarpaulin (0.175 kg)
    • Personal Items (0.385 kg)

  • 6-Liter Chestpack (0.6 kg unloaded)
    • Desert Survival Kit (1 kg empty + 1 kg water)
      • 1-liter canteen
      • first aid kit (incl. TL12 pocket med scanner)
      • salt tablets
      • folding shovel
      • solar still kit x3 (plastic, straws, watertraps, etc)
      • knife and sheath
      • signal mirror
      • handheld distress flares x3
      • water purification kit (250 tablets)
      • filter straw (with ceramic filter capable of filering out all non-chemical contaminants bigger than viruses)
    • Messkit (0.175 kg)
    • Sunblock and Insect Repellant Cream (0.45 kg)
    • Longarm Cleaning Kit (0.65 kg)
    • 2-Liter Canteen (0.45 empty + 2 kg water)
    • Personal Items (0.275 kg)

This gives a total mass of 49.85 kg (which weighs 48.853 kg in Yori's 0.98G). The load includes 3 liters of water, food for 7 days, 21 gauss rifle magazines (840 needle rounds), and 11 grenade magazines (33 grenades ... HE, HEAP, and/or flechette). It also includes a small allowance of 0.66 kg for personal items (such as a religious book, a letter writing kit, personal keepsakes, etc).

Given that humans require upto 13.5 liters of water a day the 3 liters shown here are clearly inadequate. Basic training focuses just as much on "water recons" as it does on combat skills, and water supply runs to "the front" are just as frequent as ammo supply runs.

In planned combat the backpack (but not the ammo pack) and chestpack are dropped, and the combat armour is donned ... reducing carried mass to just 31.25 kg. (Another 9.8 kg can be removed with the loss of the ammo pack, but this is not common practice.)
