Author's Notes
Introduction

This write-up is based on campaign notes reaching back over several years. As I am an MT player rather than GURPS I have used only some parts of the new GURPS:Traveller stuff ... and may even contradict minor points in GURPS:Traveller products like Behind The Claw. This is not a comment on GURP:Traveller or any of its supplements.

Because it is from my campaign it uses MegaTraveller rules (where applicable) and is set in the 'classic' era. Although it is set 'IMTU' I have tried to match all canon sources I could find (see note about GURPS:Traveller in the paragraph above). Other info comes from TNE and Rob Eaglestone's trade rules (available at Downport.com).

I should also say that I had already written a significant portion of the material here before I discovered Alvin Plummer's RICE paper (AWP-00301) on Efate. Thus this landgrab and his RICE paper are incompatable. (Doh!)

For atmosphere, the capitol of Lakatoro is very much like the city from the film "Bladerunner". Also, in addition to the 'Nam parallels I drew some inspiration from a Battletech novel "Ideal War" by Christopher Kubasik.

Finally, the thing to remember about any conflict is that few people think of themselves as the villains ... both sides feel they have a legitimate grievance with which to justify their actions.

The "non-industrial" classification on early CT products is incorrect, at all times it should have been "high population, industrial". The "ancient site" comment in 1202 suggests an ancient site was discovered and made public knowledge between 1117 and 1202, yet "Secret Of The Ancients" discribes an ancient site discovered in 354 and open to tourists. The TNE sources have added an asteroid belt to the system that was not mentioned before. The Zhodani refugees in 1202 do not contribute to the UWP population code therefore the increase from 8 billion to 10 billion represents a general increase in the indigenous population.

In 5FW boardgame (as of 1107) Efate is

  • TL13
  • Starport A
  • 150 SDB
  • 1 Colonial J4 Batron (3-3-6)
  • 1 Colonial J4 streamlined Cruron (1-2-6)
  • 1 assault carrier squadron
  • 1000 defence battalions
  • 1 Colonial Lift Infantry Corps (1C-13)
  • 1 Mercenary Division PSG (20-14)
  • 1 1C-factor troop
  • at least 3 of the 10 Ine Givar guerrilla units on planet (each have 10% local defense battalions in strength and are of local TL ... or "1C-13" each) IMTU I chose 5 units.

Some of these military forces arrived after 1105 and are described in TAS stories.

Other canon sources are an adventure in Challenge 50 that describes the world leader as Baron Urnst von Alksburg. Plus a number of early TNS entries and a mention in "The Mountain Environment". (In the last it mentions air pressure at sea level is 0.65 atm with a taint requiring a filter mask, the temperature at the mountains base (1.5km above sea level) is 30 degrees C in the summer.)

J6 Mapping conventions

Rich detail maps use the mapping conventions developed over time by GDW (the original Traveller licence holder). These include displaying high population world names in all upper case, and/or in red for capitols. These conventions are enhanced by world type symbols defined and created by P-O "BeRKA" Bergstedt. The BeRKA system is as follows:

  • Terran World: Atmosphere 6 or 8, Hydrosphere 3+
  • Garden World: Atmosphere 2-9, Hydrosphere 1+, not Terran
  • Glacier World: Some Terran worlds or Garden worlds may be Glacier worlds.
  • Desert World: Atmosphere 2-9, Hydrosphere 0
  • Exotic World: Atmosphere A or D, or (Atmosphere B or C, Hydrosphere 1+)
  • Hothouse World: Atmosphere B or C, Hydrosphere 0
  • Ocean World: Hydrosphere A
  • Ice-capped World: Atmosphere 0 or 1, Hydrosphere 1+
  • Rock Ball: Size 1+, Atmosphere 0, Hydrosphere 0
  • Asteroid Belt: Size 0
  • Unexplored World: No player data is available

The definition for Glacier Worlds is further refined as any Terran World or Garden World where the PRIMARY star in the system is a dwarf, sub-dwarf, or is a main-sequence star of spectral class M3 to M9.
