60 dead as rebels and 'loyalists' clash. Fighting between Ine Givar rebels and 'loyalist' militia on Efate has left 60 dead and nearly 100 injured. Civilians were amoung the dead when a bomb destroyed a church where some had sought refuge from the fighting.

The attack, in the Mitchell Community in Vandere District, left 93 people injured. Some 140 others were reported missing - thought to be either fleeing from violence or buried under the rubble, health workers said. Javwin Edier who works at the emergency medical service in the city of Tanna, said: "A gas-cylinder bomb exploded in the community and shock-waves destroyed the church."

Emiquera Moslio, acting governor of Vandere, said that 60 bodies had been counted. But the Tanna emergency service said corpses still had not been removed from the combat zone. "If someone told you they knew exactly how many were dead, or who the dead were, they were lying," one official said, declining to be named.
